138

Case IH 138 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) or AUX (Auxiliary Valve): Aux 4th Raise solenoid failed open or short circuit.

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for actuating the "raise" (or extend) function of the #4 auxiliary hydraulic remote valve. The system is seeing either an open circuit (such as a broken wire, blown fuse, or disconnected plug) or a short circuit (a wire rubbing against the chassis ground or another power source, or an internally shorted solenoid coil).

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series
  • MX Magnum
  • Magnum 235-340
  • Steiger Series
  • Quadtrac Series
  • STX
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the connector plugged into the #4 remote valve raise solenoid for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the #4 remote valve back to the controller, checking for chafed or broken wires (especially across articulation joints).

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil with a multimeter; infinite resistance (OL) or zero ohms indicates an internally failed coil.

  4. Perform a voltage and continuity test on the harness with the key ON to check for proper reference voltage and continuity back to the controller pins.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic remotes to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate the Component

Access the rear remote valve stack and identify the #4 valve block. Identify the specific "raise" solenoid coil.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical pigtail connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or snap-ring at the end of the solenoid stem.

  4. Slide Off the Coil

Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil assembly off the proportional valve cartridge.

  5. Installation

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem. Install and tighten the retaining nut to OEM torque specs (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge and cause the valve to stick).

  6. Reconnection

Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector to prevent moisture intrusion, and plug it back into the new solenoid.

  7. Testing

Start the tractor, clear the stored fault codes from the monitor, and actuate the #4 remote to verify the fault does not return and the hydraulic function operates smoothly.
