Case IH 14 – TMF Controller: 5 Volt Sensor Supply voltage is too high
Issue description
The 5-volt reference circuit is reading a voltage above its upper limit. This condition is almost always caused by the 5V reference wire being shorted to a higher voltage source, such as a 12V battery circuit, either inside a sensor, within the wiring harness, or inside the controller itself.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Magnum
- Case IH MX Magnum Series
- Case IH TG Series
- Case IH Steiger Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Perform a sensor isolation test to check for an internal short in any sensor sharing the 5V reference (e.g., hitch position, rockshaft, draft pin, clutch pedal).
Check the wiring harness for a short to a 12V wire if all sensors are disconnected and voltage remains high.
Test the TMF controller for an internal short if the harness is completely isolated and tests good.
Repair steps
Turn the tractor's key switch to the ON position (engine off) so the fault code is active.
Using a multimeter, probe the 5V reference wire at one of the easily accessible sensor connectors (e.g., the clutch pedal potentiometer or hitch position potentiometer).
It will likely read closer to 12V.
Disconnect the sensors on the 5V circuit one at a time.
Monitor your multimeter (or the active fault codes on the dash/diagnostic tool) after each sensor is unplugged.
If the voltage drops back down to 5V (or the code goes inactive) immediately after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor has an internal short.
Replace the faulty sensor.
If you have unplugged all sensors on the 5V circuit and the voltage is still too high, leave them unplugged and inspect the wiring harness between the TMF controller and the sensors.
Look for chafed wire insulation or pinched harnesses where the 5V wire is touching a 12V power wire. Repair the wiring harness if a short is found.
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine with no shorts to 12V, the TMF controller has failed internally and must be replaced.
