Case IH 14002 – ICU (Instrument Cluster Unit) or Transmission/PTO Controller: Rear PTO short to GND
Issue description
The control module has detected a short circuit to ground in the electrical circuit responsible for operating the rear Power Take-Off (PTO). Voltage intended for the PTO solenoid or the PTO switch is finding a premature path to the chassis ground, preventing the PTO from initializing or engaging properly.

Check the cause
Inspect the cab PTO switch and rear fender PTO switches (if equipped) for water ingress and internal corrosion.
Disconnect the PTO engagement solenoid and use a multimeter to check resistance across the pins and from the power pin to chassis ground to check for an internal short.
Disconnect the wiring harness at the PTO controller and solenoid, and test the signal wire for continuity to ground to check for chafed or pinched wiring.
Turn the key ON and check the voltage at the PTO switch to see if it is being pulled down significantly (e.g., reading 5V-7V instead of 12V).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the ECU during electrical repairs.
Repair Wiring Harness
If the harness is damaged, trace the wiring harness along the transmission housing and chassis. Look for pinch points or melted insulation. Splice and solder the damaged wire, then seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing.
Replace Faulty Switch
If the switch is faulty, remove the dashboard panel or fender housing to access the back of the PTO switch. Unplug the connector, pop out the old switch, and install the new one. Ensure the weather-pack connector seals are intact to prevent future water damage.
Replace Shorted Solenoid
If the solenoid is shorted, clean the area around the PTO control valve on the transmission. Unbolt the retaining nut/bracket for the PTO solenoid, remove the faulty coil, and slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem. Torque to OEM specifications.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the 14002 fault code has moved from 'Active' to 'Stored/Inactive'.
Clear Codes
Clear the stored codes via the instrument cluster display or a CAN-bus diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and test the PTO engagement to ensure proper operation.
Parts you might need
(3)Rear PTO Engagement Solenoid Coil
Often the primary culprit for internal shorts.
Cab PTO Switch / F-N-R Switch
Prone to water intrusion causing internal grounding.
Rear Fender PTO Switch
If equipped, these are highly exposed to the elements and frequently short out.
