Case IH 14011 – ICU / ADIC / ECM: Engine speed sensor - short circuit to voltage (Vcc) or open circuit (mechanical engine only)
Issue description
The control module is detecting an abnormal electrical condition on the engine speed sensor circuit. The circuit is either broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorted directly to the power supply voltage (Vcc). Because the controller cannot read the alternating voltage pulses generated by the sensor, it cannot determine the engine RPM.

Check the cause
Inspect the engine speed sensor connector and the wiring harness leading back to the ICU/ECM for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires.
Disconnect the sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.
With the engine stopped and the sensor disconnected, measure the resistance across the sensor's pins (typically around 450 Ohms ± 20 Ohms). An infinite reading confirms an internal open circuit in the sensor.
Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Probe the harness side of the connector to ensure the Vcc reference voltage (usually 5V) and ground are present, and that the signal wire is not shorted to the Vcc wire.
If the resistance is good, test the sensor output by cranking the engine to verify it produces an alternating current (AC) voltage when the gear teeth pass by it.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the engine speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the engine block reading the crankshaft flywheel teeth or the camshaft gear.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing.
Clean the Port
Wipe the mounting port clean of any oil, dirt, or metallic debris that could interfere with the new sensor's magnetic field.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the replacement engine speed sensor. If it requires an air gap adjustment, set it to the OEM specification using a feeler gauge; otherwise, simply tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque.
Reconnect and Clear
Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and verify that the engine RPM is displaying correctly on the dash/monitor. Clear the inactive 14011 fault code from the ICU/ECM memory using a diagnostic tool or the machine's onboard diagnostic menu.
