Case IH 14013 - ICU – ICU: Wheel Angle Sensor short circuit to VCC

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the sensor that is at its maximum limit (often greater than 4.9V), indicating that the signal wire is shorted directly to the power source. When this occurs, auto-guidance and automated steering functions are typically disabled for safety.

   Inspect the wheel angle sensor wiring harness along the front steering axle for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the signal wire to short to the VCC (power) wire.

   Disconnect the sensor connector (e.g., X235 or X236) and check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power and signal terminals.

   With the key on (engine off), use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference supply at the connector. Check for continuity between the 5V supply pin and the signal return pin on the harness side to confirm if the short is in the wiring or internal to the sensor.

   Ensure the sensor's physical linkage arms are not bent, broken, or disconnected, which could force the sensor past its normal rotational limits.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the wheel angle sensor mounted on the front steering axle.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt the mechanical linkage arm from the sensor, then remove the sensor mounting hardware to free the unit.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, splice and repair the damaged wires using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

   Install the New Sensor

   Mount the replacement wheel angle sensor to the axle and reattach the mechanical linkage.

   Reconnect

   Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Calibration

   You must perform a steering angle sensor calibration procedure using the tractor's display monitor (e.g., AFS Pro) or a diagnostic tool. The system needs to learn the new sensor's center, left-lock, and right-lock voltage values to ensure accurate AFS AccuGuide operation.
