Case IH 14013 – Instrument Cluster (ICU / UCM) or UTI (Utility/Transmission/Instrument): Steering angle sensor - short circuit to Vcc

Issue description

The signal voltage from the steering angle sensor is reading higher than the expected operating range. The system detects that the sensor's signal circuit is shorted directly to the voltage supply line (Vcc), which is typically a 5V or 12V reference voltage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the steering angle sensor and its electrical connector for dirt, corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the steering angle sensor back to the Instrument Cluster/UTI. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points that could cause the signal wire to short against the Vcc (power supply) wire.

  3. Use a multimeter to verify the Vcc reference voltage at the sensor connector. Ensure it is not exceeding specifications (related codes like 14015 indicate the 5V supply is too high). Test the signal wire for continuity to the power wire to confirm the short.

  4. Disconnect the sensor to isolate the fault. If the short to Vcc disappears on the machine side of the harness, the short is internal to the steering angle sensor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section by replacing the wires/connectors or installing a replacement harness.

  3. Sensor Replacement

    If the sensor is internally shorted, unbolt the faulty steering angle sensor from the front steering axle and disconnect it from the harness. Install the new OEM sensor and torque to factory specifications.

  4. Calibration

    After replacing the sensor or repairing the harness, you must calibrate the steering angle sensor. This is especially critical for vehicles equipped with AFS AccuGuide to ensure accurate automatic steering and vehicle path precision.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, power on the tractor, and clear the fault codes from the ICU/UTI to verify the repair.
