Case IH 14014 – Chassis Control Module (CCM) / Transmission Controller: Steering angle sensor - short circuit to ground or open circuit

Issue description

The control module is not receiving a valid voltage signal from the front axle steering angle sensor (Track 1/2). The system detects that the circuit is either completely broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the signal wire is touching the chassis ground (short to GND). When this occurs, the tractor loses front axle position data, which disables or impairs Auto Steer/Auto Guidance, Mechanical Front Drive (MFD), and Differential Lock functions.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the steering angle sensor (located on the front steering axle/kingpin area) and its wiring harness for physical damage, packed mud, or debris.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent/loose pins in the connector.

  3. Wiring Continuity & Short Test: Using a multimeter, check the wiring harness from the sensor connector back to the control module. Test for continuity to rule out a broken wire (open circuit). Test the signal wire for continuity to the tractor frame/ground to rule out a short circuit to GND.

  4. Voltage Supply Check: Turn the key ON and verify that the sensor is receiving its 5V reference supply voltage from the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, center the steering, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Removal

    Locate the steering angle sensor on the front axle. Disconnect the electrical harness connector.

  3. Dismount

    Remove the mounting bolts/hardware securing the sensor to the steering linkage/axle housing.

  4. Installation

    Mount the new OEM steering angle sensor in the exact same orientation. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical harness connector and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    A new steering angle sensor must be calibrated to the tractor's ECU. Using the tractor's in-cab display monitor or a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), initiate the steering angle calibration procedure. You will be prompted to turn the steering wheel to the full-left lock, full-right lock, and exact center so the module can learn the new sensor's voltage limits.
