Case IH 14014 – ICU (Instrumentation Control Unit): ENGINE coolant temperature data is ERROR or NOT AVAILABLE state from GOV

Issue description

The engine controller (GOV) is unable to provide a valid engine coolant temperature reading to the instrumentation/display systems. This usually happens because the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor has failed, the wiring to the sensor is damaged, or there is a CAN bus communication error between the engine controller and the cab displays.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying code 14018 (GOV Off Line). If present, the entire engine controller has lost communication with the ICU, pointing to a broader CAN bus or power issue rather than a bad temperature sensor.

  2. Check for direct sensor codes like 144 (Coolant Temperature Sensor voltage is too high) or 145 (Coolant Temperature Sensor voltage is too low). If present alongside 14014, the ECT sensor or its direct wiring harness is the definitive culprit.

  3. Locate the ECT sensor on the engine block/cylinder head. Inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture.

  4. Check the wiring harness for chafing or breaks.

  5. Test the sensor. If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has likely failed internally and is sending an out-of-range signal to the engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the tractor is turned off and the engine is completely cool to avoid burns from hot, pressurized coolant.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain the engine coolant to a level just below the ECT sensor port to prevent excessive fluid loss.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty ECT sensor.

  4. Removal

    Unthread and remove the old sensor from the engine block or cylinder head.

  5. Installation

    Clean the port threads thoroughly. Apply a suitable liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied) to prevent leaks. Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Refill and Test

    Refill the cooling system with the correct specification coolant. Start the engine, check the sensor port for leaks, and verify that the temperature gauge on the dash/ICU is now reading correctly. The 14014 code should move to an inactive state and can be cleared.
