Case IH 14016 – ADIC / ICU / Universal Controller: 5V supply voltage - too low
Issue description
The 5-volt reference circuit (Vref_1 or Vref_2) that powers various 5V sensors has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted sensor pulling the entire 5V circuit down, or an internal failure in the controller.

Check the cause
Isolate the 5V circuit by disconnecting sensors on the Vref_1/Vref_2 circuit (starting with the foot throttle sensor) one at a time.
Measure voltage at the sensor connector with a multimeter. If the voltage returns to a steady 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.
Inspect the wiring harness between the ADIC/ICU and the sensors for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion that could be causing a short to ground.
Test the controller output by disconnecting the harness directly at the ADIC/ICU and measuring the 5V output pins. If output is less than 5V with nothing attached, the controller has an internal failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Components
Locate the ADIC/ICU (usually behind the dashboard/cluster) and the sensors on the affected 5V circuit (e.g., foot throttle potentiometer).
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire and splice in a new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors. If the connector is corroded, splice in a new connector pigtail.
Replace the Sensor (If Applicable)
If a sensor was identified as the culprit, unbolt the faulty sensor (e.g., foot throttle sensor), install the replacement, and plug in the electrical connector.
Replace the ADIC/ICU (If Applicable)
If the controller is not outputting 5V, remove the dashboard trim, unplug the main harness connectors from the ADIC, and install a new unit. (Note: A new ADIC/ICU will likely require dealer programming/calibration to sync the tractor's hours and configuration).
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the AFS Pro display or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 14016 fault code. Start the tractor and verify the code does not return.
