Case IH 14017 – ICU (Instrument Cluster Unit): Fuel Level Sensor voltage out of range low.

Issue description

The electronic control system is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel tank sending unit that is below the minimum acceptable threshold (often below 0.125V). This condition typically points to a short-to-ground in the sensor's signal wire, a completely failed/shorted fuel level sensor, or a malfunctioning instrument cluster controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Gauge Behavior: Turn the key ON. If the gauge reads completely empty and does not move, or if it jumps erratically, it confirms the loss of signal.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the fuel tank sending unit to the cab entry point (and up to the A-post where the ICU is located). Look for pinched wires, chafing against the frame, or a short to ground.

  3. Test Sensor Resistance: Disconnect the sensor. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals. Depending on the exact model, a good sensor typically reads between 33 ohms (full) and 240 ohms (empty). If it reads 0 ohms (dead short) or infinite resistance (open), the sensor has failed.

  4. Test Supply Voltage: With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, check the supply wire at the connector. You should see a reference voltage (often 8V or 12V depending on the specific ICU system). If there is no voltage, the issue is in the wiring harness or the ICU.

  5. Bypass Test: To rule out a break in the main chassis harness, you can run a temporary jumper wire directly from the sensor's signal terminal to the back of the ICU on the A-post. If the gauge starts working and the code clears, the factory harness has a short or break.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

    Locate the fuel level sensor on the top or upper side of the fuel tank. Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor with compressed air and a rag to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the fuel tank.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the mounting screws (usually 5 hex-washer head screws) or the locking ring holding the sensor in place.

  5. Extract the Unit

    Carefully pull the old sensor assembly and float arm straight up and out of the tank.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Place a new gasket onto the tank opening. Insert the new sensor assembly, being careful not to bend the float arm.

  7. Secure and Reconnect

    Tighten the mounting screws in a star pattern to ensure an even seal. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that fault code 14017 moves to an "inactive" state or clears entirely.
