Case IH 14021 – ADIC (Armrest Display / Advanced Display Instrument Cluster) or Digital Instrument Cluster: Cranking line – shorted to +12V
Issue description
The control module is detecting a continuous +12-volt signal on the engine cranking (starting) circuit even when the ignition key is not actively being held in the "Start" position. This is a "short-to-power" condition, which usually means a component is stuck closed or a wire has rubbed against a live power source, sending an uncommanded start signal to the system.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Farmall
- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series (150, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, etc.)
- Farmall Series (115U Pro EP, Workmaster equivalents, and compact CVT models)
- Magnum Series (180 through 380)
- Maxxum Series (110 through 150)
- Steiger / STX Series
Check the cause
Ignition Switch Test: Check the ignition switch for internal failure. Use a multimeter to verify if the switch is continuously passing voltage to the "Crank" pin even when the key is in the "Run" or "Off" position.
Starter Relay Test: Locate the starter relay in the fuse/relay panel. Remove the relay and check for continuity across the load pins; if there is continuity without the relay coil being energized, the relay is stuck closed.
Harness Inspection: If the switch and relay test good, inspect the wiring harness between the ignition switch, the starter relay, and the ADIC/Instrument Cluster. Look for melted insulation, pinched wires, or chafing that could cause the cranking signal wire to short against a constant +12V wire.
Module Disconnect Test: Disconnect the starter relay and see if the 12V signal on the cranking line drops on your diagnostic tool. If it does, the short is before the relay (likely the switch). If it doesn't, the short is in the harness leading to the module.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before performing electrical repairs to prevent accidental engine cranking or short circuits.
Access Components
Remove the steering column cowl or dashboard trim to access the back of the ignition switch, and open the main electrical panel to access the starter relay.
Replace the Faulty Component
If the relay is stuck: Pull the old starter relay from the fuse block. Inspect the socket terminals for heat damage or melting. Plug in the new OEM starter relay. If the ignition switch is shorted: Unplug the wiring pigtail from the back of the ignition switch. Remove the retaining nut on the front of the dash, pull the old switch out, and install the new switch. Reconnect the pigtail.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If a short-to-power was found in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire, solder in a new section of the correct gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the "ON" position and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu) to clear the 14021 fault code. Test the starting system to ensure the tractor cranks normally and the code does not return.
