Case IH 14021 - ICU – ICU: Cranking line - shorted to 12V

The engine start line (cranking signal) has remained high (receiving 12V) for over 1 minute continuously. The system detects this as an abnormal condition, as the starter should only be engaged momentarily.

   Check the Ignition/Key Switch to ensure it is not mechanically stuck in the 'crank' position or internally shorted, sending a continuous 12V signal.

   Test the Starter Motor Relay (X035) for continuity to ensure the internal contacts have not welded/stuck closed, which would keep the cranking line high.

   Inspect Connector X005 (connecting Cab Main Harness to Main Frame Harness) for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins causing a short to power.

   Probe the start line circuit at the instrument panel (pin CN1/16) and trace it to the starter relay. Look for chafed insulation or melted wires that are shorting the cranking line directly to a 12V power source.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental engine cranking or electrical damage during the repair.

   Isolate the Short

   Disconnect the starter relay and the ignition switch. Use a multimeter to check for continuity to 12V on the cranking signal wire.

   Repair Wiring

   If the multimeter shows a short to 12V in the harness, trace the wire through Connector X005. Repair any chafed or melted sections of the wiring harness using heat-shrink tubing and electrical tape, or replace the damaged harness section.

   Replace Faulty Components

   If the starter relay is stuck closed (fails to open when power is removed), replace the relay. If the ignition switch continuously outputs 12V on the crank pin when released to the 'ON' position, replace the ignition switch.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reinstall all connectors and relays. Reconnect the battery. Use the electronic service tool (EST) or the dashboard 'H Menu' diagnostic mode to clear the stored 14021 fault code.

   Verify Repair

   Start the tractor normally. Verify that the starter disengages when the key is released and ensure the fault code does not return after 1 minute of operation.
