14022

Case IH 14022 – ADIC (Armrest Display/Instrument Cluster) or CCU/TECU: Cranking line – short circuit to ground

Issue description

The electrical circuit responsible for sending the start/crank signal to the starter relay has shorted out against a ground source (such as the machine's chassis or a ground wire).

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Farmall
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Farmall Series (85C, 95C, 105C, 115U Pro EP)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series (135, 145, 150)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness: Trace the cranking line circuit from the ignition switch (or ADIC/controller) to the starter relay. Look for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that may be touching the frame or other ground points.

  2. Test the starter relay: Remove the starter relay and test it for internal shorts. A failed relay can sometimes short the control circuit to ground.

  3. Check the ignition switch: Test the ignition switch terminals to ensure it is not internally shorting the crank signal to ground when turned to the 'Start' position.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing electrical repairs to prevent further damage or accidental cranking.

  2. Isolate the Short

Using a multimeter set to continuity/ohms, probe the cranking line wire with the starter relay removed. If continuity to ground is present, the short is in the harness. If continuity to ground disappears when the relay is removed, the relay is internally shorted.

  3. Repair the Harness

If a short to ground is indicated in the wiring, repair the damaged section of the harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the harness section as required.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

If the wiring is intact but the starter relay or ignition switch tested faulty, replace the respective component.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes from the ADIC/controller, and attempt to crank the engine to verify the repair.
