Case IH 14041 – Instrumentation Module (INST): Engine coolant temperature sensor - short to Vcc or open circuit (mechanical engine only)

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that is higher than the maximum expected threshold. This is typically caused by a broken wire (open circuit), a disconnected sensor, an internal failure of the sensor itself, or a wiring short to a power source (Vcc).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the ECT sensor on the engine block, cylinder head, or thermostat housing. Check the electrical connector to ensure it is securely plugged in.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Wiring Harness Test: Inspect the wiring harness leading from the sensor back to the instrumentation module. Look for rubbed-through insulation that might be shorting to a 5V or 12V power source (Vcc), or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  4. Sensor Resistance Test: The ECT sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance with temperature. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (infinite resistance) regardless of engine temperature, the sensor has an internal open circuit and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the ECT sensor on the engine cooling system (typically near the thermostat housing or threaded directly into the cylinder head).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 2-terminal electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for Coolant Loss

    Place a clean drain pan under the sensor location, as removing the sensor will release engine coolant. (Alternatively, partially drain the radiator to drop the coolant level below the sensor).

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty ECT sensor from the engine block.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new ECT sensor into the port. If the new sensor does not have pre-applied thread sealant, apply a small amount of liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape to the threads. Torque to the OEM specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Refill and Bleed

    Top off the engine coolant to replace any that was lost. Start the engine and let it run up to operating temperature to bleed any air from the cooling system.

  9. Verify

    Check the instrumentation panel to ensure the temperature gauge is reading correctly and that fault code 14041 has cleared.
