Case IH 14051 - ICU – ICU (Instrument Cluster Unit): Fuel level sensor - short circuit to Vcc or open circuit.
Issue description
The control module is receiving a high fuel sensor input voltage (typically >3.28 V). This happens when the signal wire is broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorted directly to a power source (Vcc).

Check the cause
Locate the fuel level sender unit on the fuel tank and inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture.
Trace the wiring harness from the fuel level sensor back to the ICU/Instrument Cluster, looking for chafed wires shorting to a power source (Vcc) or broken wires causing an open circuit.
Disconnect the sensor and measure the voltage at the harness side (should not exceed the 3.28 V threshold).
Test the sensor's resistance; an infinite resistance reading confirms the sensor itself has an internal open circuit and has failed.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery. Clean the top of the fuel tank around the sender unit thoroughly to prevent dirt from falling into the fuel.
Disconnect Lines
Depending on the specific model's tank layout, disconnect the fuel supply and return pipes, as well as the fuel tank breather pipe if they obstruct the sender.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the fuel level sender unit electrical connector.
Remove the Sensor
Unscrew or unbolt the retaining ring holding the fuel level sender unit in place and carefully pull the float/sender assembly out of the tank.
Install the New Part
Insert the new fuel level sender unit, ensuring the float arm is not obstructed and the rubber gasket/seal is seated properly to prevent leaks.
Reassembly
Reconnect the fuel lines, breather pipe, and the electrical connector.
Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition to the ON position, and verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that fault code 14051 changes to an inactive state or clears.
