Case IH 14052 – Electrical Systems / Instrumentation (INST): Fuel level sensor - short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the signal voltage from the fuel tank sending unit has dropped to zero (or near zero) volts, indicating that the signal wire is making direct contact with a ground source, or the sensor itself has failed internally and shorted out.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the top of the fuel tank to the cab for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the metal chassis.

  2. Perform a disconnect test: Turn the key ON and disconnect the electrical pigtail at the fuel level sensor. If the code changes to an Open Circuit code, the sensor is internally shorted. If it remains 14052, the wiring harness is shorted.

  3. Perform a multimeter continuity check: With the battery disconnected and sensor unplugged, check for continuity between the sensor's signal wire pin on the harness side and a known good chassis ground to confirm a wiring short.

Repair steps

  1. Trace harness

    If the wiring harness is shorted: Trace the harness to locate the exact point of contact with the chassis.

  2. Cut damaged wire

    Cut out the damaged section of the wire.

  3. Splice wire

    Splice in a new section of wire using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors.

  4. Secure harness

    Wrap the repaired section in protective wire loom and secure it away from sharp metal edges using zip ties.

  5. Disconnect battery

    If the fuel level sensor is internally shorted (Sensor Replacement): Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Clean tank area

    Clean the area around the top of the fuel tank to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the fuel.

  7. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel level sensor.

  8. Remove mounting hardware

    Remove the mounting screws or the locking ring securing the sending unit to the tank.

  9. Remove old sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor assembly straight up and out of the tank, taking care not to bend the float arm (if applicable) or drip fuel.

  10. Install new sensor

    Install the new fuel level sensor, ensuring you use a new gasket/O-ring to prevent fuel leaks and moisture ingress.

  11. Secure mounting hardware

    Secure the mounting screws/lock ring in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.

  12. Reconnect components

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  13. Verify repair

    Turn the key to the ON position to verify the fuel gauge reads accurately and the 14052 code moves to an inactive state (or clears).
