Case IH 14082 – Instrument Cluster (INST) or Central Controller / Armrest Module: Engine oil pressure sensor - short circuit to ground or open circuit (mechanical engine only)

Issue description

This indicates that the controller is receiving a voltage signal from the engine oil pressure sensor that is too low. This condition is typically caused by a broken wire (open circuit), a wire rubbing against the chassis (short to ground), or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block. Inspect the sensor's electrical connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or water ingress.

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the main engine harness/controller. Look for pinched wires, chafed insulation, or areas where the wire might be grounding out against the metal engine block or frame.

  3. Voltage/Continuity Test: Disconnect the sensor. Turn the key to the ON position and check for reference voltage at the connector. Test the signal wire for continuity to the controller and ensure it does not have continuity to ground (which would confirm a short circuit).

  4. Sensor Test: If the wiring is intact and shows no shorts, the sensor itself has likely failed internally and is shorting the circuit to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the engine oil pressure sensor (location varies by engine, typically on the side of the engine block near the oil filter housing).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostics revealed a chafed wire, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Remove Sensor

    If the wiring is fine, use a deep socket or wrench to unscrew the faulty oil pressure sensor from the engine block. Have a rag ready to catch any residual oil drips.

  6. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading. (Note: Some sensors require a dab of liquid thread sealant if they do not come with pre-applied sealant or an O-ring). Tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor until it clicks securely.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and monitor the instrument cluster. Ensure the low oil pressure warning disappears and the fault code is moved to an inactive state. Clear the code using a diagnostic tool if it does not self-clear.
