14092

Case IH 14092 – Transmission Controller: Transmission output speed sensor short to ground

Issue description

The voltage signal from the transmission output speed sensor is being grounded out, meaning the controller is not receiving the correct speed data required for proper transmission shifting and speedometer operation.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Magnum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Farmall Series
  • Steiger Series
  • MX / TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission output speed sensor to the transmission controller for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires that could be grounding out against the chassis.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for continuity to ground. If the wire is grounded while disconnected from the sensor, the short is in the wiring harness.

  3. If the wiring harness tests fine, the internal circuitry of the transmission output speed sensor has likely failed and shorted internally.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If a short is found in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire and secure it in a protective loom away from moving parts or heat sources.

  2. Locate Sensor

If the harness is intact, locate the transmission output speed sensor on the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect Connector

    Disconnect the 4-way electrical connector.

  4. Remove Sensor

Remove the retaining bolt/hardware and pull the old sensor out of the housing.

  5. Install New Sensor

Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor and install it into the transmission housing. Secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reconnect Connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 14092 fault code from the Transmission Controller. Test drive the tractor to verify that the speedometer registers correctly, the transmission shifts smoothly, and the code does not return.
