14098

Case IH 14098 – Transmission Controller (TCU) or ADIC (Analogue Digital Instrument Cluster): Transmission oil pressure sensor - open circuit or short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module is either not detecting a signal from the transmission oil pressure sensor (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorted directly to a ground source.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Maxxum Series (5120, 5130, 5140, 5150, 5220, 5230, 5240, 5250)
  • Puma Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • CVT / Profi Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil pressure sensor for visible damage, chafing, melting, or disconnected plugs

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for continuity to the transmission controller. Test the signal wire for a short to ground.

  3. Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground at the connector

  4. Verify the transmission fluid level and condition if erratic pressure readings preceded the failure

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Find the transmission oil pressure sensor on the transmission case. On many models, this requires removing a small access panel or cab floor plate to reach the sensor block.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Remove

Unscrew the old sensor from the transmission housing. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

  4. Install

Apply a dab of hydraulic thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied with thread locker/sealant). Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the factory wiring harness back into the sensor.

  6. Clear Codes

Use the tractor's Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab diagnostic menu to clear the inactive 14098 fault code.

  7. Test

Start the tractor, allow it to reach operating temperature, and verify that the transmission pressure reads correctly on the display without the code returning.
