Case IH 14103 – ADIC (Advanced Data Instrument Cluster): Alternator lamp not working (ADIC only)
Issue description
The ADIC (Advanced Data Instrument Cluster) monitors the electrical circuit for the alternator warning lamp (the battery charge indicator on the dash). This code triggers when the cluster detects an open circuit, a short, or a burned-out bulb in this specific circuit. This is a critical fault because the warning lamp circuit provides the initial excitation voltage to the alternator's regulator; if the lamp circuit fails, the alternator may not begin charging the battery.

Check the cause
Verify charging system output by measuring voltage at the battery with the engine running (14.2V to 14.5V indicates the alternator is charging; ~12V indicates it is not being excited).
Inspect the alternator exciter wire (connected to the D+ or L terminal on the back of the alternator) for loose connections, corrosion, or a broken wire at the terminal ring.
Disconnect the exciter wire from the alternator and test for continuity between the alternator plug and the instrument cluster harness.
Test the incandescent bulb inside the instrument cluster for a blown filament.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken or chafed exciter wire near the alternator, splice and repair the wire using heat-shrink connectors. Reattach it securely to the D+/L terminal.
Access the Instrument Cluster
If the wiring is good, remove the steering column covers or dashboard trim panels to access the rear of the ADIC (instrument cluster).
Replace the Bulb
Locate the socket for the alternator warning lamp on the back of the cluster. Twist the socket counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the bulb out and inspect the filament. If it is burned out or tests open with a multimeter, replace it with a new 12V 1W bulb. (Note: Some newer ADIC panels use soldered LEDs; if the LED has failed on a sealed board, the cluster may require professional repair or replacement).
Test the Alternator Regulator
If the bulb and wiring are both perfectly fine, the fault may be an internal open circuit within the alternator's voltage regulator preventing the ADIC from seeing the completed circuit. In this case, the voltage regulator or the entire alternator assembly must be replaced.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reinstall the instrument cluster and reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position—the alternator lamp should now illuminate. Start the engine, and the lamp should turn off. Verify the fault code 14103 has moved to an inactive state or cleared.
