Case IH 14106 – Steering Controller (KA) or Autoguidance/Navigation Controller: Steering sensor – present but not configured

Issue description

The machine's electronic system successfully detects the physical presence of the steering angle sensor on the network, but the sensor has not been calibrated or configured within the software.

Check the cause

  1. Check Sensor Limits: Access the diagnostic menu on the display (e.g., AFS Pro 700) and check the steering angle sensor voltage. Ensure the sensor is not rotated near or beyond its 0V or 5.0V limits.

  2. Inspect Mechanical Linkage: Verify that the mechanical linkage connecting the sensor to the steering cylinder is not bent, seized, or adjusted too long/short, which can push the sensor out of its expected operating range.

  3. Verify Sensor Type: Ensure the correct steering sensor type is selected in the display's Toolbox/Setup menu.

  4. Check Connections: Ensure the sensor is securely plugged in and that there are no damaged pins at the sensor connector or the Steering Controller.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the tractor's hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature. Move the machine to a wide-open, flat area.

  2. Access Calibration Menu

    On the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display, navigate to CALIBRATION > CALIBR.

  3. Select Calibration

    Choose the Rear Wheel Position (Steering Sensor) calibration.

  4. Center the Steering

    Drive the tractor in a perfectly straight line.

  5. Save Position

    Press "OK" on the display to save the center position.

  6. Verify Cylinder Rod Length

    Measure the steering cylinder rod length on both the left and right sides. The measurements must be within 1/4" of each other. If they are not, adjust the mechanical linkage to center it properly.

  7. Steering Valve Calibration

    If prompted, proceed to the Steering Valve Calibration in the same menu to ensure the hydraulic valves are synced with the newly configured sensor.

  8. Save and Restart

    Cycle the key switch to save the new configuration to the controller's EEPROM and clear the 14106 code.
