142

Case IH 142 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) or AUX (Auxiliary Valve) / Armrest controller: Aux 5th Raise solenoid failed open or short circuit.

Issue description

The controller is commanding the 5th auxiliary remote hydraulic valve to the "Raise" (or extend) position, but it is not sensing the expected electrical current. The system has detected either an open circuit (such as a broken wire, disconnected plug, or burnt-out internal coil) or a short circuit to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series
  • Case IH TG Series
  • Case IH STX Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the 5th auxiliary remote valve block (rear of tractor) for chafed wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Perform a resistance test by disconnecting the harness from the 5th Raise solenoid and measuring resistance across the coil's pins (infinite ohms indicates an open circuit, 0 ohms indicates a dead short).

  3. Perform a component swap test by swapping the 5th Raise solenoid coil with a known-good coil from an adjacent valve. If the fault code follows the coil, the coil is bad; if it remains 142, the issue is in the wiring or controller.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery

This prevents electrical spikes to the TMF controller.

  2. Locate the 5th auxiliary remote valve assembly

Located at the rear hydraulic block.

  3. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector

Disconnect from the faulty "Raise" solenoid.

  4. Remove the retaining nut or fastener

This secures the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve stem/cartridge.

  5. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem

Note: You generally do not need to open the hydraulic system or drain fluid just to replace the electromagnetic coil.

  6. Clean the valve stem

    Remove any dirt or debris.

  7. Slide the new replacement solenoid coil onto the stem

  8. Reinstall and tighten the retaining nut

Caution: Do not overtighten, as this can distort the coil housing and cause premature failure.

  9. Reconnect the electrical harness connector

  10. Reconnect the battery and test

Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes via the monitor, and test the 5th remote valve for proper operation.
