Case IH 144 – TRANS (Transmission Controller): Front suspension position is below the lower suspension range.

Issue description

The front axle position sensor (a potentiometer) is sending a voltage signal to the controller indicating that the axle has dropped below its calibrated minimum physical travel limit, or the sensor itself is failing/frozen and sending an out-of-range low signal.

Check the cause

  1. Monitor live data in the 'Trans FSUS' (Front Suspension) menu on the A-Post display to check the readings of the position sensor and control valve pressure sensors.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the position sensor above the front axle for physical damage, such as rubbing or tearing from field debris.

  3. Inspect the position sensor itself for physical damage, moisture intrusion, or freezing (a known issue where the potentiometer freezes up).

  4. Check the charge on the suspension accumulator located near the left-hand fuel tank if the suspension is constantly settling and raising (hunting for position).

  5. Verify the pressure sensors on the suspended front axle control valve read exactly 0 psi when the axle is fully lowered, which is required for calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and safely support the front chassis to remove weight/pressure from the suspension components if you need to work under it.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the harness is damaged by stubble, splice and repair the wiring, ensuring you wrap it in protective loom and route it out of the way of field debris.

  3. Replace the Position Sensor

    If the harness is intact but the sensor reading is erratic or frozen out of range, disconnect the sensor harness, unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket above the axle, and install the new OEM position sensor.

  4. Replace Pressure Sensors

    If the suspension drops but the system won't calibrate because the pressure sensors aren't reading 0 psi at the bottom of the stroke, replace the pressure sensors on the control valve block.

  5. Recharge Accumulator

    If the physical suspension is dropping because it cannot hold pressure, recharge the suspension accumulator.

  6. Perform Calibration

    Once parts are replaced, you must perform a front suspension calibration through the A-Post display/controller. The system will fully lower the axle (verifying 0 psi) and then raise it to relearn the upper and lower travel limits.
