Case IH 146 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Regulated system pressure low (below 100PSI / 689 KPA)

Issue description

The hydraulic pressure within the transmission's regulated circuit has dropped below the critical minimum threshold of 100 PSI. A drop below this level can lead to clutch slippage, failure to shift, or severe internal transmission damage.

Check the cause

  1. Verify transmission hydraulic fluid level on the dipstick/sight glass and check for burnt odors or heavy metallic contamination.

  2. Inspect the transmission oil filter for severe clogs that could restrict flow.

  3. Perform a mechanical pressure test by connecting a mechanical hydraulic pressure gauge to the transmission regulated pressure test port. Normal pressure is typically well above 100 PSI (often around 290+ PSI). If normal, the issue is electrical. If below 100 PSI, the issue is mechanical/hydraulic.

  4. If mechanical pressure is good (electrical issue), inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission pressure sensor for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or a corroded connector.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for electrical repair

    Scenario A (Electrical Failure): Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and shut off the engine.

  2. Locate pressure sensor

    Locate the transmission pressure sensor/switch on the transmission control valve block.

  3. Inspect wiring and remove sensor

    Disconnect the wiring harness and clean the contacts. If the wiring is intact but the sensor is sending a false low reading to the TRANS controller, unthread the faulty pressure sensor.

  4. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM transmission pressure sensor.

  5. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes via the diagnostic menu or by cycling the battery disconnect, then test-drive to verify the code does not return.

  6. Drain transmission fluid

    Scenario B (Mechanical/Hydraulic Failure): If the mechanical gauge confirmed low pressure, drain the transmission fluid into a clean container.

  7. Replace transmission oil filter

    Remove the transmission oil filter and replace it with a new OEM filter.

  8. Locate regulator valve assembly

    Locate the transmission pressure regulator valve assembly on the side of the transmission housing.

  9. Remove regulator valve block

    Carefully remove the regulator valve block.

  10. Inspect regulator valve

    Disassemble the regulator valve and inspect the internal spool for scoring, sticking, or debris. Inspect the regulator springs for breakage (a broken spring will fail to hold pressure).

  11. Replace damaged components

    Replace any damaged O-rings, broken springs, or the entire regulator valve assembly if the bore is heavily scored.

  12. Reinstall and re-test

    Reinstall the valve assembly, refill the transmission with clean fluid, and re-test the pressure with the mechanical gauge. Note: If pressure remains below 100 PSI after valve repair, the transmission charge pump may be failing, or there is a massive internal leak (blown clutch pack seal) requiring a transmission teardown.
