Case IH 148 – Engine Controller (ENG): Frequency Throttle Signal shorted low
Issue description
The engine control module is receiving a signal from the frequency throttle (typically the hand throttle or foot pedal position sensor) that has dropped below the normal operating voltage or frequency range. This condition is almost always caused by a short to ground in the signal wire, a disconnected sensor, or an internal failure of the throttle potentiometer/sensor itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the throttle position sensor (hand throttle and/or decelerator pedal) and its electrical connector for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.
Trace the wiring harness from the throttle sensor back to the Engine ECU. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the signal wire to short against the chassis (ground).
Disconnect the sensor and check the harness-side connector for proper 5V reference (supply voltage) and a good ground.
Check the signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the Engine ECU pin, and test the signal wire for a short to ground (resistance to chassis ground should be out of limits/open).
If the wiring is intact, perform a sensor sweep test. Move the throttle through its range of motion and verify the resistance/frequency changes smoothly. A dead spot or a constant 'zero' reading confirms a failed sensor.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Access the Sensor
Remove any cab trim panels or console covers necessary to access the base of the hand throttle or foot pedal assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty frequency throttle sensor.
Wiring Repair (If Applicable)
If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace that section of the harness.
Remove the Sensor
Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips holding the throttle position sensor to the throttle lever assembly.
Install the New Part
Mount the new OEM throttle position sensor and secure the fasteners.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reinstall any removed trim panels.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic service tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display) to clear the inactive Fault Code 148. Start the engine and sweep the throttle through its full range to ensure smooth RPM response and verify the code does not return.
