Case IH 1487.09 – Secondary cab modules / Cab Control Unit (CCU): Illumination Brightness Percent - Abnormal Update Rate / Timeout Error
Issue description
A control module on the CAN bus has lost communication with the module responsible for broadcasting the cab backlight brightness command. The receiving module expected a CAN message containing the backlight status but did not receive it within the programmed timeout period.

Check the cause
Verify battery voltage and cab ground connections. Low voltage or a floating ground can cause cab modules to temporarily drop off the CAN bus, triggering timeout errors.
Look for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., SPN 639). If multiple modules are reporting missing messages, the issue is likely a severed CAN backbone or a failed terminating resistor.
Disconnect the batteries and measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the cab diagnostic port. It should read exactly 60 ohms. 120 ohms indicates a missing resistor or open bus; near 0 ohms indicates shorted CAN lines.
Inspect the wiring harness routing near the A-post display or instrument cluster for chafing, pinched wires, or moisture intrusion in the connectors.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent shorting any modules during testing.
Access the Master Display
Remove the interior trim panels to access the rear of the Cornerpost Display or Cab Control Unit (where the backlight dimmer switch/control is located).
Inspect Connectors
Unplug the main harness connector to the display. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or "pushed" pins that aren't making solid contact. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Test Harness Continuity
Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the display connector to the next module in the daisy chain (or the diagnostic port).
Repair Wiring
If a break or high resistance is found in the CAN wires, repair the harness using OEM-approved splice connectors and heat shrink.
Module Replacement
If the wiring is perfectly intact, the terminating resistors are good, and the code returns immediately upon startup (and backlight control is completely unresponsive), the CAN transceiver inside the Cab Control Unit / Display has likely failed. The module will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
Clear Codes
Reconnect battery power, cycle the key, and use a diagnostic tool (like the Case IH EST) to clear inactive fault codes.
