Case IH 149 – ARM (Armrest Controller): Hitch UPPER LIMIT potentiometer is failed

The tractor's data bus has signaled that the upper limit potentiometer, which tells the hitch controller the maximum height limit set by the operator, has failed. Failure modes typically include a physical or electrical failure of the potentiometer, a software execution error within the controller, or misalignment/sensor drift due to extreme vibration or dirt buildup.

   Inspect the wiring harness for continuity between the potentiometer and the armrest controller. Look for moisture, dirt buildup, or loose connectors causing voltage drops.

   Test the resistance of the upper limit potentiometer using a multimeter. The resistance across pins A to C should measure 10,000 ohms (± 10%).

   Verify if the sensor is simply misaligned, as the code can be triggered by sensor drift or a software execution error.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect battery power to protect the ARM controller.

   Access the Potentiometer

   Locate the hitch upper limit control knob/potentiometer assembly on the armrest console.

   Test/Remove

   Unplug the potentiometer's wiring harness. Perform the 10,000-ohm resistance test (Pins A to C). If the readings are out of specification, open circuits, or dead spots are found as the dial is turned, the potentiometer is defective.

   Replace

   Remove the retaining hardware, swap in the new OEM potentiometer, and reconnect the harness.

   Recalibrate

   You must perform an electronic hitch calibration cycle after replacing the sensor. Failing to calibrate the new potentiometer will result in false errors or the hitch continuously trying to raise past its mechanical limit.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the stored ARM 149 fault code and test hitch operation.
