Case IH 14901 – CAN Network / Main Vehicle Controller: Engine controller missing (EDC16)
Issue description
This is a CAN bus communication error indicating that the main vehicle network has lost communication with the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The system is expecting data from the engine controller but is receiving no signal, meaning the module is either unpowered, disconnected, suffering from a wiring fault, or has failed internally.

Check the cause
Verify power and ground to the EDC16 engine controller, including the battery feed and Engine Shutdown Relay supply
Check the fuse box for any blown fuses or faulty relays that supply power to the engine ECU
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EDC16 controller for chafed wires, moisture ingress, or bent/corroded pins
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or ECU connector with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Inspect the ECU Connectors
Locate the Bosch EDC16 controller (typically mounted on the side of the engine). Disconnect the main harness connectors.
Clean and Reseat
If dirt, moisture, or light corrosion is present, clean the pins with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner. Allow it to dry completely, apply dielectric grease to the seal, and firmly reconnect the harness.
Test Wiring Continuity
If the connectors are clean, use a multimeter to test continuity on the CAN bus lines between the engine controller harness and the main cab controller. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.
Check Relays
Swap the Engine Shutdown Relay (or main ECU power relay) with a known good relay of the same type to rule out a sticking relay contact.
Replace/Clone the ECU
If the wiring harness, CAN bus resistance, power, and grounds all test perfectly but the 14901 code persists, the EDC16 controller has likely suffered an internal hardware failure. The ECU will need to be removed and either sent to a specialist for cloning/repair or replaced with a new unit programmed by a Case IH dealer.
