Case IH 14914 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller (XA): Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller missing (XA)

Issue description

Communication failure on the tractor's CAN bus network. The main vehicle controllers are unable to detect or communicate with the Electronic Park Lock controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 160
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 175
  • Puma 185
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 190
  • Magnum 210
  • Magnum 225
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Access the 'H' Menu Diagnostics: Insert the diagnostic test switch (Special Tool #380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic connector (located in the cab on the right-hand rear A-pillar behind the operator's seat).

  2. Navigate to Module XA: Use the dot matrix display to scroll to the 'XA' (EPL) module.

  3. Run Sub-System Tests: Check H3 for configurations and options.

  4. Run Sub-System Tests: Check H4 to view the software revision level (verifies if the module is communicating at all).

  5. Run Sub-System Tests: Run H5 to perform a switch operation test.

  6. Attempt Calibration: Navigate to H1 (Calibration procedures) and attempt to recalibrate the EPL.

  7. Wiring & Harness Check: Inspect the CAN bus wiring, power, and ground circuits leading to the EPL actuator/controller for open circuits, corrosion, or damaged pins.

Repair steps

  1. Recalibration Attempt

Operate the system after attempting an H1 calibration. If the error code clears, verify normal operation.

  2. Module Replacement

If the error code persists, or if the EPL controller refuses to calibrate/communicate, the EPL actuator assembly has failed internally and must be removed and replaced.

  3. Mechanical Inspection

If the electronic park brake was dragging prior to the module failure, inspect the brake rotors/steels on the input shaft. Warped or sticking discs can overwork the actuator. Note: Accessing these mechanical components requires splitting the tractor.

  4. Software Workaround

On some older software versions, a technician can use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to enter the configurations menu and manually disable the Electronic Park Lock. If disabled, the operator must rely entirely on the manual handbrake. Note: CNH has removed this bypass option in newer software updates.
