Case IH 14916 – Smart Fuse Box (SFB): SFB missing

A CAN bus communication error indicating that the Smart Fuse Box (SFB) has dropped off the vehicle's communication network and is no longer sending or receiving messages.

   Verify Configuration: Check if the SFB is properly configured in the vehicle's system (Code 14128 indicates 'SFB - Present but not configured').

   Power and Ground Testing: Verify that the Smart Fuse Box is receiving proper battery voltage and has a clean, secure ground connection.

   CAN Bus Network Check: Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the SFB connector for 60 ohms of resistance across the network (with the battery disconnected) to ensure the CAN bus termination is intact.

   Software Version Check: Check the current software version of the SFB using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) for outdated software causing communication timeouts.

   Inspect Wiring and Connectors

   Locate the Smart Fuse Box (often in the rear electrical component panel or cab distribution area). Disconnect the main harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.

   Repair Harness

   If CAN wires are chafed or broken, repair the wiring harness according to OEM standards and clear the fault codes.

   Flash / Update Software

   If the wiring is sound, connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. Apply the latest software update to the Smart Fuse Box.

   Replace the SFB

   If the module fails to communicate with the EST tool, has internal hardware damage, or will not hold a flash, the Smart Fuse Box must be replaced.

   Reconfiguration

   After installing a new SFB, use the EST tool to configure the module to the tractor/machine so it is recognized by the UCM and Instrument Cluster.
