Case IH 15002 – Steering Controller: Steering wheel control proximity sensor - open circuit

The control module is not detecting a complete electrical path to or from the proximity sensor that monitors the steering wheel's position or movement. An 'open circuit' typically points to a broken wire, an unplugged connector, a corroded pin, or a complete internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the steering wheel control proximity sensor and wiring harness for visible breaks, chafing, or rodent damage.

   Disconnect the sensor plug and the corresponding connector at the Steering Controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pins that have been pushed back into the housing.

   Use a digital multimeter to test the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the Steering Controller for continuity.

   Test the sensor's internal resistance according to the specific model's service manual to confirm if it has failed open.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the electrical system.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove any steering column cowlings or access panels required to reach the steering wheel control proximity sensor.

   Harness Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, splice and repair the wiring harness using weather-resistant heat-shrink connectors.

   Sensor Replacement

   Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty proximity sensor. Remove the retaining bolts or mounting bracket holding the sensor in place. Install the new proximity sensor, ensuring it is seated correctly and gapped to the OEM specifications. Secure the mounting hardware.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the sensor's electrical plug, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reinstall any removed panels.

   Calibration and Testing

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard display) to clear the stored 15002 fault code. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify the code does not return and that the steering controller registers the sensor's input.
