15003

Case IH 15003 – Steering Controller: Steering wheel control proximity sensor - short circuit

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module has detected a short circuit (either to ground or to a voltage source) in the electrical circuit of the proximity sensor responsible for monitoring the steering wheel's movement or position.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma Series (140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, CVX)
  • Steiger Series
  • MX / TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running up the steering column to the proximity sensor for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the tilt-steering mechanism.

  2. Disconnect the proximity sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. Perform a sensor vs. wiring isolation test: With the sensor unplugged, turn the key ON. If the code changes to 15002 (Open Circuit), the sensor has failed internally. If 15003 remains, the short circuit is in the wiring harness.

  4. Use a digital multimeter to test the sensor's signal wire for continuity to ground or continuity to the power supply wire.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Access the Sensor

Remove the plastic shrouds/covers around the steering column to access the steering valve and proximity sensor assembly.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty steering wheel proximity sensor. Remove the retaining screws or clips holding the sensor to its mounting bracket on the steering column.

  4. Installation

Mount the new proximity sensor in the exact same orientation. Secure the fasteners (do not overtighten, as these sensors often have plastic housings).

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks into place. Reinstall the steering column covers.

  6. Clear Codes & Calibrate

Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on. Clear the inactive 15003 fault code via the Pro 700 / AFS monitor or diagnostic tool.

  7. Steering Calibration

Vehicles equipped with AFS AccuGuide will require a steering angle sensor calibration after replacement to ensure accurate automatic steering and vehicle path precision.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Steering Wheel Control Proximity Sensor

Sometimes referred to in Danfoss steering units as a SASA Steering Wheel Position Sensor. Look up generic sensor in the CNH parts catalog using the tractor's specific PIN/Serial Number.
