Case IH 15012 – Steering Controller (KA module): Split valve spool - stuck open
Issue description
The system detects that the spool inside the dividing/split valve of the Fast Steer hydraulic system is mechanically jammed in the open position, preventing the tractor from properly transitioning between standard and Fast Steer modes.

Check the cause
Check hydraulic oil temperature to ensure it is above 5°C (41°F), as cold, highly viscous oil can cause sluggish spool movement
Inspect the Fast Steer Split Valve Position Sensor (LVDT) and verify circuits 3175, 3176, 3177, 3178, and 3179 are intact without open or short circuits
Test the change valve solenoid to ensure it is receiving voltage and is not shorted
Check for mechanical binding caused by debris, contamination, or scoring inside the valve block
Repair steps
Prepare tractor for service
Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.
Locate valve block
Locate the Fast Steer split valve block assembly (typically integrated near the steering control unit).
Disconnect electrical connectors
Disconnect the electrical harness connectors for the split valve LVDT position sensor and the change valve solenoid.
Remove split valve spool
Carefully unbolt and remove the split valve spool from the valve body.
Inspect spool and bore
Inspect the spool and the internal bore of the valve body for scoring, burrs, metallic debris, or contamination.
Clean components
Clean the spool and valve body thoroughly using an approved hydraulic parts cleaner.
Lubricate or replace valve assembly
If the spool or the bore is heavily scored or damaged, the valve assembly must be replaced. If it is just dirty, lubricate the spool with clean hydraulic fluid (e.g., Case IH Hy-Tran) and reinstall it. Ensure it moves freely without any binding.
Reassemble valve
Reassemble the valve and reconnect the LVDT sensor and solenoid wiring.
Recalibrate the system
Perform the Fast Steer system calibration to clear the code and allow the KA controller to relearn the spool's end-stops by navigating to the H1 menu on the KA controller via the instrument cluster and following the calibration prompts.
