Case IH 15014 – Steering Controller (KA Module): Split valve spool stuck in transition zone - cannot identify which steering mode the tractor is definitely in.

Issue description

The LVDT sensor detects that the split valve spool is physically stuck halfway (in the transition zone). Because the spool is neither fully open nor fully closed, the system disables Fast Steer for safety, as it cannot determine the current steering ratio.

Check the cause

  1. Check hydraulic oil temperature (cold oil cause): Ensure the hydraulic oil is above 5°C (41°F), as cold, highly viscous oil can cause the spool to move too slowly or stick.

  2. Verify LVDT sensor calibration (calibration cause): Enter the H1 menu via the ADIC under the Fast Steer System (KA Module) sub-menu. Ensure the sensor type is set to 'LVDT' and attempt to recalibrate.

  3. Inspect wiring and connectors (electrical cause): Check the wiring harness going to the Fast Steer Split Valve Position Sensor (LVDT) and the Change Valve Solenoid for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Check for mechanical binding (mechanical cause): If electrical circuits and calibration are fine, the spool is likely physically binding due to hydraulic contamination, debris, or scoring inside the valve body.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for service

    Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate split valve assembly

    Locate the Fast Steer split valve assembly, which is typically mounted near or integrated with the steering orbital motor at the base of the steering column.

  3. Disconnect electrical connectors

    Disconnect the electrical connectors for the LVDT sensor and the change valve solenoid.

  4. Disconnect hydraulic lines

    Relieve hydraulic system pressure. Mark and carefully disconnect the hydraulic lines connected to the split valve.

  5. Remove split valve assembly

    Unbolt and remove the Fast Steer split valve assembly from the tractor.

  6. Disassemble and inspect valve

    Disassemble the valve on a clean workbench. Carefully extract the spool and inspect both the spool and the valve bore for scoring, burrs, or foreign debris that would cause it to hang up in the transition zone.

  7. Clean components

    Clean all components thoroughly with an approved hydraulic solvent.

  8. Evaluate and reassemble or replace

    If the spool or bore is heavily scored or damaged, the valve assembly cannot be reliably rebuilt and must be replaced. If it was merely debris, lubricate the spool with clean hydraulic fluid and reassemble.

  9. Reinstall valve assembly

    Reinstall the valve assembly on the tractor. Reconnect all hydraulic lines (using new O-rings) and electrical connectors.

  10. Test system

    Start the tractor, check for leaks, and allow the hydraulic oil to reach operating temperature.

  11. Calibrate Fast Steer

    Perform the Fast Steer calibration procedure via the instrument cluster (H1 menu) so the KA controller can learn the correct end-of-stroke positions for the LVDT sensor.
