Case IH 1504-03 - VCM – VCM: Seat switch voltage high
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the operator presence seat switch that exceeds the normal expected operating range. This condition is typically caused by a short-to-power in the seat switch wiring harness, a failed internal resistor within the switch, or a fault at the module's input pin.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Steiger
- Optum
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness directly under and behind the operator's seat for pinched, chafed, or broken wires shorting to a 12V power source.
Disconnect the seat switch connector and use a digital multimeter to test the switch for proper continuity/resistance when the seat is occupied (switch closed) and unoccupied (switch open).
With the key ON and the switch disconnected, probe the harness side of the connector to verify the reference voltage coming from the VCM. If you see full battery voltage (12V+) on the signal return wire, there is a short-to-power in the harness.
Inspect the VCM harness connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging circuits.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and turn off the master battery disconnect switch.
Access the Switch
Remove the seat cushion or access panels as necessary to reach the operator presence switch located in the base of the seat.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire shorting to power, cut out the damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire using weatherproof butt connectors and heat-shrink tubing. Secure the harness with zip ties, ensuring it has enough slack to move freely with the seat's suspension.
Replace the Switch (If Applicable)
If the switch failed the multimeter test, unclip or unbolt the faulty switch from the seat base. Install the new switch and secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the seat switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Test and Clear
Turn the master battery switch back on. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the AFS Pro display to clear the inactive 1504-03 fault code. Sit in the seat and verify that the operator presence icon registers correctly without throwing a new code.
Parts you might need
(2)Operator Presence Seat Switch / Seat Sensor
The exact part number varies heavily depending on the specific seat option installed from the factory (e.g., Grammer vs. Sears seating options). When ordering through a Case IH dealer, you must provide the tractor's PIN/serial number and verify the brand of the seat base to ensure the correct switch and connector type is supplied.
Wiring harness repair pigtail
If the connector itself is damaged.
