1504-04 - VCM

Case IH 1504-04 - VCM – VCM: Seat switch voltage low

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the operator presence seat switch is below the minimum expected threshold. This condition typically indicates that the switch has failed, is stuck open, or there is a short-to-ground/open circuit in the wiring harness connecting the switch to the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Verify the operator is sitting fully and squarely in the seat, as improper engagement can trigger the fault.

  2. Test the tractor's battery voltage (should be between 12 and 14 volts) to rule out a false low voltage reading caused by low overall system voltage.

  3. Use an electronic service tool or diagnostic monitor to observe the 'SEAT OPERATOR PRESENT SW' parameter while pressing on the seat.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness from the seat switch to the VCM for pinched or chafed wires under the seat suspension mechanism.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the key switch to cut power to the VCM.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the seat cushion or access the bottom of the seat suspension assembly to locate the operator presence seat switch and its wiring pigtail.

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

Unplug the seat switch connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-out terminals, or moisture intrusion.

  4. Continuity Test

Using a digital multimeter, test the seat switch for continuity. The switch should show an open circuit when the seat is empty, and continuity (closed circuit) when weight is applied to the seat.

  5. Harness Test

If the switch operates correctly, use the multimeter to check the harness side for a short to ground or a broken wire between the seat connector and the VCM. Repair any damaged wiring.

  6. Replace the Switch

If the switch fails the continuity test, remove the mounting hardware, install the replacement seat switch, and plug it into the harness.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn the key on, clear the inactive fault codes from the VCM, and sit in the seat to verify the 1504-04 code does not return.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Operator Presence Seat Switch / Seat Safety Switch

Ensure you are replacing the operator presence switch and not the air suspension adjustment switch (which is often part # 87347940).

  • Normally Open Seat Switch (2-pin)
