Case IH 15101 – TCU / Steering Controller / Machine ECM: CAN bus communication failure
Issue description
The electronic steering valve controller has gone offline because the CAN data link has been interrupted. The steering valve is failing to receive expected broadcast messages from the TCU or other network devices.

Check the cause
Check the CAN Data Link Harness: Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wiring between the electronic steering valve and the TCU/Machine ECM for opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to system voltage.
Verify Power and Ground: Ensure the steering valve controller is receiving proper system voltage and has a clean ground connection when the key switch is ON.
Check Display Faults: Review the system information and machine test screens on the cab display (e.g., Pro 1200 or Viper® 4+ display) to see if other modules are also reporting CAN offline errors, which would indicate a main bus failure rather than an isolated steering valve failure.
Repair steps
Repair or replace the damaged CAN bus wiring or the electronic steering valve itself.
Calibration
If the steering valve is replaced, you must perform an RS1™ calibration (or equivalent auto-guidance calibration).
Display Setup
Perform the steering valve calibration in the Pro 1200 or Viper® 4+ display to ensure the new valve communicates properly with the GPS and auto-steering systems.
