Case IH 1511 – Instrument Cluster (IC) or Universal Control Module (UCM): Right Brake Light Open Circuit

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module has detected an open circuit (infinite resistance or lack of current draw) on the right brake light circuit. Technically, this means the electrical path to the right brake light is broken. The most common causes are a blown bulb, a severed or pinched wire in the chassis harness, a disconnected plug, or severe corrosion inside the connector preventing electrical contact. When this fault is active, a "white" master telltale lamp will illuminate on the dash.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR series
  • SV series
  • TR series
  • TV series
  • SR130
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • TR270

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the right rear tail/brake light assembly for obvious physical damage, water intrusion, or a visibly burnt-out bulb.

  2. Unplug the right brake light assembly and inspect the wiring harness connector and the pins on the light assembly for dirt, moisture, or green corrosion.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, check for 12V at the brake light power pin on the machine's harness connector while an assistant presses the brake pedal (or activates the brake circuit).

  4. Verify continuity to ground on the ground pin of the harness connector.

  5. If you have no voltage or no ground, trace the chassis harness back from the right rear pillar toward the main fuse/relay block, looking for chafed, broken, or rodent-damaged wires.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the right rear tail light assembly on the rear chassis pillar.

  3. Disconnect the electrical pigtail/connector from the back of the light assembly.

  4. Remove the mounting hardware (usually bolts or retaining screws) securing the light assembly to the machine frame.

  5. Remove the old light assembly.

  6. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the pins of the new light assembly to prevent future corrosion.

  7. Mount the new light assembly into the housing and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  8. Reconnect the wiring harness until the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Turn the key to the ON position and test the brake lights to ensure functionality.

The 1511 fault code should move from "Active" to "Inactive" or clear entirely.

Fits Case IH / Case Construction Skid Steers and Track Loaders (SR, SV, TR, TV series) as well as equivalent New Holland models. If your specific older model uses a replaceable halogen bulb rather than a sealed LED/housing, a standard P21/5W 12V bulb is commonly used.
