Case IH 15200 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller battery voltage too high.

Issue description

The system has detected that the voltage on the electronic steering valve input at connector C361, pin 8, is greater than 36 V. This indicates an extreme overvoltage condition, as agricultural equipment typically operates on 12V or 24V electrical systems. This is usually caused by a severe short to a high-voltage source, a failing alternator voltage regulator, or a wiring harness failure.

Check the cause

  1. System Voltage Check: Test the machine's batteries and alternator output with a multimeter while the engine is running. A reading greater than 36V indicates a catastrophic failure of the alternator's voltage regulator.

  2. Harness Inspection: Locate the Steering Valve Controller and disconnect connector C361. Inspect the connector for corrosion, water ingress, or melted pins.

  3. Pin Testing: Measure the voltage at pin 8 of connector C361 with the key on. If the voltage is abnormally high (above standard battery voltage), trace the wire back to the power source to locate a short to another power circuit.

  4. Ground Verification: Ensure the Steering Valve Controller has clean, secure ground connections, as a floating ground can sometimes cause erratic high-voltage readings on input pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always stop the engine and disconnect the battery and the main connector of the control unit before starting electrical repair work to prevent further module damage.

  2. Resolve Charging Issues

    If the alternator was found to be overcharging during the diagnostic phase, replace the alternator and voltage regulator assembly.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a short-to-power was found on the wire leading to C361 pin 8, open the wiring loom and repair the chafed or melted wires. Use heat-shrink connectors to ensure a weatherproof seal.

  4. Replace Module (If Necessary)

    If the wiring harness and charging system test perfectly normal, but the controller still registers >36V internally, the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  5. Recalibrate

    After replacing the SVC or repairing the harness, reconnect the batteries, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform a steering calibration test to ensure the AFS AccuGuide system functions correctly.
