Case IH 15213 - AST – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller failure - Coil supply switch state synchronization between main and safety controllers failed.

Issue description

Internal logic or hardware failure within the steering valve controller. The main and safety microcontrollers are reading different states for the internal coil supply switch and cannot synchronize, which flags a critical safety fault and disables automated/electronic steering functions.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the tractor's key power to determine if the fault is an intermittent software glitch or an active, hard fault.

  2. Look for accompanying steering valve codes (e.g., 15214, 15215, 15216) which also point to internal EEPROM or switch state failures.

  3. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Verify the software versions of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC). Ensure they are updated to at least version 2.02 (Software Part Number: 51631896) or the latest OEM release, as software interpolation errors can sometimes trigger false synchronization faults.

  4. Inspect the main wiring harness connecting to the steering valve. Look for corrosion, pushed pins, or moisture intrusion in the connector. A severe voltage drop on the supply line can cause the internal microcontrollers to desynchronize.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure the tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and remove the key.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

    Relieve residual hydraulic pressure in the steering system by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times.

  3. Locate the steering valve controller

    Locate the steering valve controller assembly (usually located under the cab floor or at the base of the steering column, depending on the exact model).

  4. Clean the area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  5. Disconnect electrical harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the steering valve controller.

  6. Disconnect and cap hydraulic lines

    Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines. Immediately cap and plug all lines and valve ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  7. Remove the faulty unit

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering valve and remove the faulty unit.

  8. Install the new steering valve controller

    Install the new steering valve controller and torque the mounting bolts to the model-specific OEM specifications.

  9. Reconnect lines and harness

    Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.

  10. Bleed air from hydraulic circuit

    Start the tractor and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the hydraulic steering circuit. Check the fluid level and top off as necessary.

  11. Calibrate the new steering valve

    Connect the Case IH EST tool. You must flash the correct controller dataset (e.g., Advanced Steering Configuration dataset) and calibrate the new steering valve to the tractor's CCM before it will operate correctly.
