Case IH 15214 – Advanced Steering module / Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller failure - Coil supply switch state is incorrect for operation

Issue description

This fault indicates an internal hardware or logic failure within the steering valve controller. Specifically, the internal switch (or safety relay) that supplies power to the steering valve coils (solenoids) is reading a state that does not match the commanded state (e.g., it is reading "ON" when it should be "OFF", or vice versa). Because this controls the autoguidance steering solenoids, the system will disable automated steering to prevent uncommanded movements.

Check the cause

  1. Verify System Voltage: Check the battery voltage reaching the Steering Valve Controller. Voltage drops or spikes can cause the internal coil supply switch to malfunction or fail its self-test.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Locate the steering valve controller and inspect the main wiring harness connectors for moisture ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes such as 15213 (Coil supply switch state synchronization failed) or 15215 (Coil supply switch self-test failed) which confirm an internal controller failure.

  4. Software Verification: Check the SVC software version using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and ensure the controller firmware is up to date before condemning the hardware.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, relieve hydraulic pressure by turning the steering wheel back and forth, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the autoguidance steering valve assembly (typically mounted on the steering block under the cab or near the front axle).

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the wiring harness from the Steering Valve Controller.

  4. Remove Hydraulic Lines

    Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to the steering valve. Cap all lines and fittings immediately to prevent system contamination.

  5. Remove the Valve

    Unbolt the steering valve assembly from its mounting bracket and remove it from the tractor.

  6. Install New Valve

    Mount the replacement autoguidance steering valve assembly. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and torque to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect Electricals

    Plug the wiring harness back into the new controller.

  8. Bleed the System

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the hydraulic steering circuit. Check for leaks.

  9. Calibration

    Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool). Flash the correct software dataset to the new Steering Valve Controller and perform the Advanced Steering / Autoguidance calibration procedure so the main controller recognizes the new valve.
