Issue description

This code indicates that the internal self-test of the coil supply switch within the steering valve controller did not pass upon initialization or during operation. The controller cannot verify the integrity or state of the switch that supplies power to the steering valve coils, which is a critical safety and operational check for the electronic steering system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the steering valve coils for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or loose connections.

  2. Use a multimeter to check for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to a power source (greater than 4.9V) on the coil supply circuits.

  3. Verify that the Steering Valve Controller is receiving the correct operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Clear the fault codes using a Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or diagnostic scan tool, cycle the key, and observe if the self-test fails again upon startup. If the code immediately returns, it is a hard fault indicating a failed controller or coil.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical shorts or steering actuation during service.

  2. Access the Controller/Valve

    Locate the Steering Valve Controller and the steering valve assembly (location varies by model, often under the cab or near the front axle/steering linkage).

  3. Isolate the Fault

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the steering valve. If the wiring harness tests perfectly for continuity and resistance, the fault lies internally within the Steering Valve Controller's coil supply switch.

  4. Replace the Component

    Depending on the specific machine's architecture, the Steering Valve Controller may be integrated into the Steering Valve assembly itself. Remove the hydraulic lines (cap them to prevent contamination) and unbolt the faulty steering valve/controller unit.

  5. Install the New Unit

    Bolt the new steering valve/controller into place and reconnect the hydraulic lines to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. System Bleeding

    Reconnect the battery, start the machine, and cycle the steering wheel fully left and right multiple times to bleed air from the hydraulic steering circuit.

  7. Calibration

    Connect the Case IH diagnostic scan tool to the diagnostic port (HH menu system) and perform the steering system calibration and initialization procedures to pair the new controller with the machine's main ECU.
