Case IH 15217 – Steering Valve Controller / Chassis Control Module (CCM): Primary wheel angle sensor (AD1) - open circuit or short circuit to ground.

The control module has lost the position signal from the primary steering angle sensor on the front axle due to a broken wire (open circuit), a wire shorting to the chassis ground, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the steering angle sensor housing on the front steering axle for physical damage from field debris.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the wiring harness for pinched wires, chafing, or corrosion inside the connector pins.

   Use a multimeter to check the primary signal wire (AD1) for continuity to ground (to confirm a short circuit to ground).

   Verify that the sensor is receiving its standard 5V reference supply and has a solid ground connection.

   If the wiring is intact, suspect an internal failure of the primary sensor potentiometer/hall-effect mechanism causing it to drop its signal.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting any modules during the repair.

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty steering angle sensor on the front axle. Unbolt the sensor linkage and mounting hardware.

   Install the New Sensor

   Mount the replacement steering angle sensor (ensure you match the physical linkage orientation of the old unit). Secure the mounting bolts.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the locking tab clicks.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. You must use a diagnostic scan tool to perform a steering angle sensor calibration/relearn procedure. The system needs to learn the new sensor's voltage values for the center (straight ahead), full-left lock, and full-right lock positions so the auto-guidance system tracks correctly.

   Clear Codes & Test

   Clear fault code 15217 from the Steering Valve Controller and test the auto-steer system in the field to ensure it does not disengage unexpectedly.
