Case IH 15219 – Steering Valve Controller: Primary wheel/articulation angle sensor voltage too high

Issue description

The electronic steering valve controller detects a signal voltage greater than 4.9 V from the primary wheel/articulation angle sensor. This typically indicates an open ground circuit, a short to a power source (like the 5V reference), or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wheel/articulation angle sensor for physical damage to the sensor arm, linkage, or mounting bracket.

  2. Disconnect the sensor harness and check for water intrusion, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or debris inside the connector.

  3. Turn the key ON (engine off) and probe the sensor harness connector to verify the 5V reference supply and ground circuit continuity (an open ground causes the signal to float to 5V).

  4. Check the signal wire for a short to voltage (e.g., rubbed bare and touching a 12V or 5V wire).

  5. Monitor the live voltage of the Primary Wheel Angle Sensor using a diagnostic tool while manually moving the steering; if stuck at 5.0V and wiring is good, the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting any controller pins during replacement.

  2. Remove the Linkage

    Unbolt the mechanical linkage arm that connects the steering cylinder/axle to the rotary arm of the angle sensor.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness. Unbolt the sensor body from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Mount the replacement sensor to the bracket. Reattach the mechanical linkage arm. Ensure the linkage is centered so it does not over-extend the sensor's rotational limits when the wheels are turned lock-to-lock.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug in the electrical harness and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    Perform a Steering Angle Sensor Calibration using the in-cab display (e.g., AFS Pro 700) or a diagnostic tool. The calibration process will ask you to steer the machine full-left, full-right, and dead-center so the controller can learn the new voltage limits.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear fault code 15219 from the Steering Valve Controller memory and test drive the machine to verify auto-guidance and steering operate smoothly.
