Case IH 15220 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Redundant wheel/articulation angle sensor voltage too low.

The electronic steering valve controller has detected that the signal voltage from the redundant wheel or articulation angle sensor has dropped below 100 mV (0.1 Volts). A reading below 100 mV usually points to an open circuit, a short to ground, a severed wire, or a completely failed sensor potentiometer.

   Visually inspect the mechanical linkage of the wheel/articulation joint and the sensor arm to ensure it is not bent, broken, or disconnected.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the redundant angle sensor and the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) for rubbed wires, corrosion, or a short to ground.

   Using a multimeter, verify the sensor is receiving its 5V reference supply and has a solid ground at the connector.

   Manually move the steering/articulation joint from lock to lock and monitor the signal voltage. It should smoothly sweep between 0.5V and 4.5V; if it remains below 100 mV, the sensor is internally faulty.

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the redundant wheel angle sensor on the front steering axle (tractors) or the articulation joint (wheel loaders).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove Hardware

   Remove the retaining hardware (e.g., 10-24x1/2 slotted washer head screws, retaining rings, or M10 nuts) securing the sensor body and linkage arm.

   Replace

   Install the new wheel/articulation angle sensor. Reattach the linkage arm, ensuring the O-rings (if applicable, e.g., size-012 or size-021) are properly seated to prevent moisture ingress.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor.

   Calibration

   You must perform a steering/articulation angle sensor calibration using the AFS Pro display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool. The controller needs to learn the new sensor's neutral, full-left, and full-right voltage limits.

   Clear Codes

   Clear fault code 15220 from the Steering Valve Controller and test drive the machine to verify the steering operates correctly without throwing the code.
