Case IH 15222 – Steering Valve Controller: Steering valve controller average temperature too high

Issue description

The electronic controller mounted to the electro-hydraulic steering valve has detected that its internal or average operating temperature has exceeded the safe operational threshold. If left unchecked, this can lead to steering system degradation or the controller shutting down to protect itself (fail-safe mode).

Check the cause

  1. Check Hydraulic Oil Temperature: The steering controller relies on the tractor's hydraulic system. If the hydraulic oil is overheating (often triggering a concurrent SPN 175 / FMI 0 code), it will overheat the steering valve controller.

  2. Inspect the Hydraulic Oil Cooler: Check the hydraulic oil cooler for mud, chaff, or blockages that restrict airflow.

  3. Check Hydraulic Fluid and Filters: Verify the hydraulic oil level is correct and check the condition of the hydraulic filter. A restricted filter can cause system bypass and excess heat.

  4. Test Load-Sensing Pressure: A fault in the load-sensing circuit (such as a stuck pump compensator) can cause the hydraulic pump to run at full pressure continuously, rapidly overheating the hydraulic oil and the steering valve block.

  5. Inspect the Valve Block Externally: Check the steering valve controller block (often located beneath the cab). Ensure it is not caked in thick mud or debris, which acts as an insulator and prevents the module from dissipating heat.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down & Clean

    Park the tractor in a safe location, turn off the engine, and allow the hydraulic system to cool. Thoroughly pressure-wash the hydraulic oil cooler radiators and the exterior of the steering valve controller block to remove insulating debris.

  2. Service the Hydraulic System

    If the hydraulic oil is degraded or the filter is near its service interval, drain the hydraulic fluid, replace the hydraulic oil filter, and refill with the OEM-specified hydraulic fluid.

  3. Test Load-Sense Line

    Connect a hydraulic pressure gauge to the steering system test port. Verify that the steering relief valve pressure is within spec (typically around 1500 PSI, depending on the exact model) and that the pump is not deadheading at maximum pressure when the steering wheel is stationary. Repair or replace the load-sense line fittings if the pump is stuck on high demand.

  4. Check Electrical Connections

    Disconnect the wiring harness to the steering valve controller. Inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or melting caused by high resistance. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  5. Replace the Controller (If Necessary)

    If the hydraulic system is running at a normal temperature, the coolers are clean, and the code 15222 persists, the internal temperature sensor of the steering valve controller has likely failed. The steering valve controller unit will need to be replaced and subsequently calibrated/programmed by a dealer using the Case IH diagnostic computer.
