Case IH 15224 - AST – AST (Auto Guidance / Steering) / Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller - temperature too low
Issue description
The temperature sensor monitoring the electronic steering valve (or the hydraulic fluid within it) is reporting a value below the minimum safe operating threshold. When the temperature is too low, hydraulic fluid viscosity is high, which can negatively impact the reaction time and accuracy of the electrohydraulic steering and auto-guidance systems.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum Series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Vestrum Series (100, 110, 120, 130)
- Farmall Series (40, 45, 50, 115U)
Check the cause
Ensure the tractor's hydraulic fluid has reached normal operating temperature, as operating in extreme cold without a warm-up period will trigger this code
Access the AST control subsystem via the instrument cluster 'H' menus (R1 module, menu H3) to view active states and sensor data
Inspect the wiring harness and DEUTSCH connectors at the electronic steering valve (often located under the right-hand service door, beneath the DEF Tank) for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or damaged pins
Verify if the internal temperature sensor or controller logic board has failed by checking if the controller still reads 'temperature too low' after a full warm-up
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Warm up the tractor's hydraulic system. Clear the fault code via the diagnostic menu and cycle the key. If the code does not return, it was an environmental cold-start issue.
Repair Harness
If wiring damage is found at the steering valve connector, repair the damaged wires or replace the pigtail connector.
Replace the Steering Valve Controller
If the wiring is intact and the fluid is warm, the steering valve controller itself is faulty. Because the temperature sensor is typically integrated into the electrohydraulic steering valve block, the valve/controller unit must be replaced.
Software Calibration
After replacing the Steering Valve Controller, the new module must be flashed with the correct software (e.g., SVC software version 2.02) and the steering system must be recalibrated using the dealer electronic service tool.
