Case IH 15225 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller 5 Volt supply too high

Issue description

The steering valve controller has detected that its 5-volt reference supply circuit is measuring an abnormally high voltage—specifically, greater than 5.35 V. This reference voltage is monitored on connector C361, pin 11.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) harness and connector C361 for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture at pin 11.

  2. Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage at C361 pin 11 with the key ON to verify if the voltage exceeds the 5.35 V threshold.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or melting, looking specifically for a short to a 12V power source.

  4. Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting the sensors on this 5V circuit one at a time. If the voltage at pin 11 drops back to a normal 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted to power.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to a 12V wire in the harness leading to C361 pin 11, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Sensor Replacement

    If unplugging a sensor corrected the voltage, replace the internally shorted sensor.

  4. Controller Replacement

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no shorts to power) and all sensors are functioning, but the controller is still outputting or reading >5.35V on the reference pin, the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) has an internal fault. Remove the mounting hardware, disconnect the harnesses, and install a new SVC.

  5. Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. If the SVC was replaced, it will need to be flashed with the correct software (e.g., software version 2.02) and the steering system will require recalibration using the Case IH diagnostic tool.

  6. Verification

    Clear the fault codes and operate the steering system to ensure code 15225 does not return.
