Case IH 15228 – Steering Valve Controller: Cut-off solenoid supply voltage too high
Issue description
The supply voltage to the cut-off solenoid is too high. This typically means the circuit is experiencing a short to a higher voltage source (such as battery voltage) or the controller is outputting a voltage higher than the expected operating range for the solenoid.

Check the cause
Verify the steering valve controller's 5-volt supply to ensure the module itself is not experiencing a general overvoltage condition.
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the steering valve controller to the cut-off solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to battery voltage.
Disconnect the cut-off solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the supply pin on the harness side while the key is ON. A reading of battery voltage (12V/24V) indicates a short to power in the harness.
Test the resistance of the cut-off solenoid to ensure it is not internally shorted.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage during repair.
Isolate the Circuit
Disconnect the electrical connector at the steering valve cut-off solenoid and the corresponding connector at the Steering Valve Controller.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, trace the wire from the controller to the solenoid. Locate the damaged section of the wire where it is contacting a 12V/24V source. Splice and solder the wire, then seal it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Solenoid
If the overvoltage condition damaged the cut-off solenoid (e.g., it fails a resistance test or is stuck open/closed), unbolt the faulty solenoid from the steering valve block and install a new one.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all electrical connectors and the battery. Turn the key ON, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform a transition test from on-road to off-road mode to ensure the cut-off solenoid spool moves correctly and the code does not return.
