Case IH 15230 – Steering Valve Controller: Cut-off solenoid supply high resistance or open circuit

The steering valve controller has detected that the electrical supply line to the cut-off solenoid (or the roading switch resistor) has abnormally high electrical resistance or a complete break in the wire (open circuit), forcing the steering system into a safe state and disabling electro-hydraulic steering.

   Locate connector C361 at the electronic steering valve. Disconnect it and closely inspect pin 6 for corrosion, moisture, backed-out terminals, or bent pins.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the wire running from C361 pin 6 to the cut-off solenoid (or roading switch). Look for infinite resistance (an open wire) or unusually high ohms indicating a frayed wire or poor ground.

   Test the resistance of the cut-off solenoid coil itself to ensure it has not failed internally.

   Monitor the live data during the switch from on-road to off-road mode to see if the voltage drops out on the supply line during the off-road safety check.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent short circuits during repair.

   Repair the Harness/Connector

   If the diagnostic tests reveal high resistance at connector C361 pin 6, clean the terminal with electrical contact cleaner. If the pin is damaged or the wire is broken, splice in a new section of wire or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace the Solenoid/Switch (If Faulty)

   If the wiring is intact but the cut-off solenoid coil is open, remove the retaining nut on the steering valve block, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the replacement coil.

   Bleed the Steering System

   Before calibrating, you must ensure all air is bled from the steering system. Start the tractor and turn the steering wheel fully to the left, then fully to the right, a minimum of 10 times. Listen for abnormal noises or vibrations.

   System Calibration

   Perform the steering calibration routine. This must be done on an on-road surface (unpainted concrete or asphalt) to ensure the steering valve is supplied with sufficient oil flow.

   Clear Codes

   Use the Case IH diagnostic tool to clear code 15230 and verify that the off-road safety check completes successfully.
